5 Parks to enjoy this summer in Berlin

Summer is coming... Believe it or not even the cold Berlin winter takes a break and lets the sun shine. One of the best ways to enjoy this period of the year is to spend some time in the beautiful parks of Berlin. Berlin is known for being Europe's greenest metropolis and around every corner you will find a green spot. Berlin people love being in parks: they do all kinds of sports there from yoga to slack line, they grill Würstchen and any sort of Gemüse or just grab a beer with friends and enjoy nature including some amazing sunsets.

Among the countless parks, gardens, parkways, playgrounds and fields here are 5 of my favourite ones:

Viktoriapark

Prepare yourself to do a little sport and climb up this 66m high hill, one of the highest in Berlin. On the top of the Kreuzberg, this is the name of the mountain, there is a monument for the Liberation Wars and you will be rewarded for your effort because from there you will have a stunnig view over the city. A picturesque artificial waterfall originates at the foot of the monument and makes its way downhill through rocks, trees and small bridges. You may also sit and relax near the water and if you are lucky you will be joined by a red little squirrel.

Volkspark Humboldthain
Here we go again with climbing and stairs... What can I say, I do love to see Berlin from above. We are here in the northern part of the city and from the two towers of the Flakturm (an ex-bunker of the Second World War) you will get a different perspective of the city. Permanent chairs and tables make it a perfect spot for a picnic with a view. The Flakturm is also surrounded by a large lawn and a beautiful rose garden.

Mauerpark Mauerpark
Wanna do something else on a Sunday than the typical Sunday brunch? Not that I do not love brunch but when it comes to parks, Sunday is the best time to be in the beautiful Mauerpark in Berlin, Prenzlauer-Berg. There are three points on my bucket list when it comes to this park. First, take a stroll through the flea market where you can surround yourself not only with vintage clothing and second hand stuff but also with handcrafted jewelery, bags and other pretty things. Also, if you get hungry, you can choose between various different foods from all over the world offered by the booths in the middle of the flea market. Second, make sure you get a front-row seat at the karaokee session at 3pm (or if you are one of the brave, grab a microphone and sing along). Last but not least, after shopping, eating and singing, you deserve to relax in the quiet hidden corner in the back of the park.

Volkspark Friedrichshain
A fairy tale park, literally! If you enter the park from the corner between Friedenstraße and Am Friedrichshain you will find yourself in front of the beautiful Märchenbrunnen (Fairy tale fountain) and you can try to recognise the charachters of various Grimms' fairy tales. The fairy tale atmosphere accompanies you in the whole park through flowering bushes, crystal clear brooks, picturesque bridges and even two small lakes with multicolored fish and ducks. In the summer you can also watch a movie in one of Berlin's very popular Freiluftkinos (open air cinema) surrounded by this beautiful setting. Yeah, I know, very, very romantic! But, if you enter the park from the other side (Danziger Str. / Paul-Heyse-Straße) you'll get a completely different feeling: a large lawn with few trees, perfect for picnics, barbecues, sport sessions or just relax sessions.

Start in den Berliner Abend

Tempelhofer Feld
What would you do with a dismissed airport and the huge grounds around it? The Berliners turned it into a huge and very beloved park, or more precisely a field. Besides the inevitable BBQ areas, this is a real paradise for everyone who loves running, riding a bicycle, inline skating or kite flying. The ex landing strips are all yours and you can set your energy free.
