During high school most of us had the opportunity to learn a foreign language. Normally we could choose between Spanish and French. However, most of us chose to study French. Why? Maybe all of your friends were studying French, so you didn't want to feel left out. Or maybe French sounds better and has a „higher status“ amongst languages. And indeed, French is all of these things, but so are all the other languages, including Spanish. So here are a few reasons to give it a chance:

Travelling. Having new adventures in a totally foreign country, getting to know the people and the culture... Who doesn't love to travel?! It doesn't matter which country or continent you're heading to next, knowing a few basic phrases of the language is always a good idea. And that's where Spanish comes into play! Spanish is the official language of *drum rolls* twenty one countries! Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic are but a few of the many Spanish speaking countries. But it doesn't stop there: Spanish-speaking people can be found all around the world. With 532 300 migrants, Spain had the highest migration rate in Europe in 2013.

In addition, the ability to speak Spanish massively improves your chances of getting a good, and well paid, job, especially in a multinational company. And particularly here in Berlin, working for a multicultural, international company is quite the norm. This modern and international approach, with businesses working together across all borders, brings a lot of customers and colleagues into daily contact with Spanish speakers. The demand for Spanish speaking employees is bigger now than ever before. There are around 450 million Spanish speakers in the world and having a strong knowledge of this language can help you not only to get a well paid job, but also to feel valuable in your workplace. There are always meetings and talks to be held, telephone conversations to be had and emails to be written. Your skills can be really indispensable in any business.

Last but not least, knowing Spanish opens the door to other languages. Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese are all examples of romance languages. This means that they all stem from Latin, and have many things in common. With a basic knowledge in Spanish, you will soon see how familiar these other languages are to you.
